SCHOLARSHIPS
Introduction
The Variable Scholarships and Loans Funding [VSLF] dubbed the New Funding Model [NFM] was unveiled by the President of the Republic of Kenya on 3rd May 2023 to address the challenges that public universities and TVET colleges were facing, primarily attributed to massive enrolment and inadequate funding. This funding model is student-centered, scholarships and loans are apportioned to students based on their assessed levels of need.
The universities and TVET colleges capitation will now be based on the VSLF model as opposed to the previous Differentiated Unit Cost (DUC) model. The funding to students shall combine scholarships, loans and household contributions on a graduated scale as determined by Means Testing Instrument [MTI] from time to time.
Why the Variable Scholarships and Loans Funding (VSLF)?
- Address financial challenges facing universities;
- Ensures eligible Kenyan students are provided with adequate financial support for their education;
- Promotes equity and access to higher education; applicants are funded depending on their levels of need;
- The Government can account for every Kenyan student supported through loans, scholarships, and bursaries in the higher education sector and
- Students are funded based on the actual cost of the programs.
Key Players in the Variable Scholarships and Loans Funding (VSLF)
- Higher Education Loans Board (HELB): For Provision of Loans and Bursaries to students enrolled in TVET Colleges and Universities
- Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Service (KUCCPS): For placement of Students in their desired and qualified courses upon application
- State Department for TVET: Provision of TVET scholarships
- Parents: To support household’s contributions;
Who is elidgible for HEF scholarships?
All trainees of Khwisero Technical and Vocational College are elidgible for HEF.
Khwisero TVC operates a HEF help desk to assist with the application process. Application is FREE.
Requirements for Undergraduate & TVET Applications
- Applicant’s valid email address and a valid telephone number;
- Applicant’s KCPE and KCSE index numbers and year of examination;
- Applicant’s Passport size photo (in jpeg/jpg/png);
- Applicant’s copy of the National ID/Maisha Card (both sides in PDF);
- Applicant’s valid bank details or valid MPESA number (registered under the applicant’s name and ID number);
- Parents’ National ID and registered telephone number;
- Copy of Parent’s death certificate if deceased (in PDF);
- Applicant’s birth certificate in PDF (if applying as a minor);
- Two guarantors’ ID numbers and registered telephone numbers (Can be parents) and
- Copy of the sponsorship letter (in PDF) if sponsored in Secondary school.
